BRING BACK THE 80’S
The Black Ball is an annual fundraising gala benefitting Keep a Child Alive, a non-profit organization founded by Alicia Keys. Their mission is to realize the end of AIDS for children and their families in Africa and India.
The night was centered around the 80’s - a time when brave activists spoke out and did something way before it was fashionable or safe to do so. When activism played a critical role in breaking the silence and cutting through the stigma surrounding the AIDS epidemic. At the event we evoked that spirit of activism from the 80’s and paid respect to those who acted during that time. The theme was reflected through the décor, collateral, messaging and musical performances.
For the creative we commissioned Shantell Martin to create illustrations using key messages that addressed the AIDS epidemic. The illustrations were an ode to Keith Haring, who was instrumental in the fight against AIDS, and were used as a backdrop for the entire event. For the collateral we juxtaposed Shantell’s black and white illustrations with bold typography creating a stark graphics. In the room we created floor to ceiling wall coverings, table cloths and digital graphics in this same vein.
